2006 marked the 25th anniversary of the first reported cases of AIDS

Black Americans represent approximately 13% of the US population but account for over 50% of all new AIDS cases

The infection rate for Blacks is eight times the rate of whites

According to the US Centers for Disease and Prevention, almost 70% of all newly diagnosed HIV positive women in the U.S. are Black women.

Black women are 23% more likely to be diagnosed with AIDS than white women

Black women and Latino women represent 83% of all new U.S. cases and 38% of those new cases are females under the age of 25, while 27% are over 25.

HIV/AIDS is among the top three causes for death of Black men between the ages of 25-54 years old

HIV/AIDS was the leading cause of death for Black women ages 25-34

Heterosexual contact is the overwhelming method of infection for Blacks.

Black men are more than twice as likely to have HIV/AIDS than their white counterparts.

Prisoners are five times as likely to have AIDS than non-prisoners with many men going into prison being HIV negative and coming out HIV positive without knowing it.

Currently, there is no comprehensive national testing, prevention, or treatment programs for jail or prison inmates.

Testing, healthcare, education, and prevention services remain critical to stopping the spread of HIV.
